This six-sided 14mm dice has the numbers 0 – 5 and is particularly useful for creating multiplication rectangles. Throw two dice at the same time, draw the rectangle on a piece of squared paper eg when throwing 2 and 4, a rectangle containing 8 squares would be created 2 x 4 =8. Square numbers such as 9 formed by 3 x 3 make it obvious why it acquired the name ‘squared’ Another useful teaching point is made when mutiplying 0 by any number, as it then becomes impossible to create a rectangle, 0 x 5 = 0.
